Invisible Grille or Security Mesh? Which One Your Singapore Home Needs
Short answer: an invisible grille and a security mesh screen do different jobs. An invisible grille is a row of thin steel cables across the window opening, there to stop people, mostly children, from falling through. It does nothing about mosquitoes. A security mesh screen covers the whole opening with a fine stainless steel mesh, so it keeps insects out while air and light still come in. Which one you need depends on what problem you are solving at that window.
What is an invisible grille?
An invisible grille is a set of slim, tensioned steel cables fixed vertically or horizontally inside the window frame, with a small gap between each cable. From a distance the cables are hard to see, which is why many Singapore homeowners pick them over traditional bar grilles: the view stays open and the flat does not feel "caged".
- What it is for: a fall barrier at windows and balconies.
- What it does not do: it does not stop mosquitoes, flies, geckos or leaves, because the gaps between cables are wide open to air and insects.
What is a security mesh screen?
A security mesh screen is a framed panel of woven stainless steel mesh fitted to the window or door. Which one does your home need?

- Fix sturdy grilles on the windows, especially in a high-rise flat, and keep them locked. Keep the keys out of your child's reach.
- Keep chairs, stools and other furniture away from windows, so children cannot climb up to them.
Whatever you install, check it from time to time: fixings, frames and locks should be firm and working.

Does an invisible grille keep mosquitoes out?
No. The cables leave open gaps, so insects pass straight through. To keep mosquitoes out with the window open you need a mesh screen.
Can I have a mesh screen and a grille on the same window?

Will a mesh screen make my room darker?
